it was amazing

This book should be a requirement for anyone who's ever gone on a "mission trip"--or anyone who intends to. It was, indeed, a requirement for me when I went to Nicaragua for the first time several years ago, and returning to the work in 2017, I re-engaged this amazing book from Brian Fikkert and Steve Corbett.

The authors practically indict the entire movement of American Christian churches who send groups of short-term missions workers clad in matching t-shirts who return feeling self-important, but whose positive impact on those they serve is left in question. But the book doesn't condemn those servants, instead providing evidence as to how they can serve better.
