A masterfully written prose/poety novel that uses many devices of imagery, allusion, symbolism, stream of consciousness style. Not a traditional narrative, reminds me of some Faulkner writing.

It wasn't entertaining though. I understand the importance and difficulty of giving voice to suppressed history. It is always disturbing to read about slavery and their abject treatment by sadistic slave owners, but add to that the opprobrium of infanticide and the mournful and somber idea of apparitions or phantoms, whatever Beloved was, and it was rather macabre.

A very good book for all the important reasons.
