it was amazing
Read in January, 1997

This was the first Vicky Bliss book I read, and I picked it up on the recommendation of a friend. However, I also had read about the Schliemann dig for the ancient city of Troy, so the artifacts in this book intrigued me for that reason. What kept me fascinated, finally, were the characters. I loved Herr Doktor Schmitt and I loved the fact the "other language" quotations in this book were in German, a language I can read. Most of the British mystery novels I'd been reading had French in them, and while it's a lovely language, I don't read it so I've always felt left out. THIS book let me be on the inside for once. Plus, John is a wonderfully conflicted non-heroic hero, sort of like Neil Caffrey in WHITE COLLAR on TV.
