This book is set back to when President Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves, and they were allowed to learn for free. There were five brothers and one sister, Virgie, who all go to school. Virgie wanted to join her brothers so badly because she wanted to learn. Their mother and father eventually let her go to school with her brothers. The siblings really seem to appreciate their education, which is something we all should do more every now and then. I would use this book as a teaching tool to have the students appreciate their education and maybe have them write a paragraph on how would you feel if you had to beg your parents to get educated? Then, we could talk about how important education is and how you need it to succeed in life.
