4.5 Stars
The only reason this isn't a 5 star book for me is because I've read so many of Garwood's Historicals in the last two months that the similarities are glaringly obvious. I can't really fault her for sticking with what works, because when it works well (_The Bride_) it is outstanding. For me it seems to work (or not) upon the personality of the heroine and upon the nature of the conflict. Our heroine here is fantastic and the conflicts--large and small--are all very well done. I especially enjoyed this book for the care shown to animals and the very good address of spiritual issues. While it's not a Christian book (few of those feature cunnilingus prominently...) it does a very good job of being a book that is about Christians, that addresses the difference between Christ and those who pervert His teachings for power.
