What an intriguing book. Before finding this at a library sale for 25 cents I'd never even heard of David Malouf. Seems like I've been missing out! He's quite a good writer. This novel took me to the early 1800s outback Australia, albeit a very narrow slice of it, basically a shack and its surrounds. It brought two Irishmen together, one an illiterate outlaw and one a very educated frontier sheriff, both 10,000 miles from home. In the deep of night before the outlaw is to be hanged they discover their mutual humanity. Really interesting.
