WELCOME TO DECEMBER PROJECT!

last year, i carved out my own short story advent calendar as my project for december, and it was so much fun i decided to do it again this year! so, each day during the month of december, i will be reading a short story and doing the barest minimum of a review because ain't no one got time for that and i'm already so far behind in all the things. however, i will be posting story links in case anyone wants to read the stories themselves and show off how maybe someone could have time for that.

here is a link to the first story in last year's project,

https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

which in turn links to the whole monthlong project, in case you wanna do some free short story reading of your own! links to the stories in this year's advent-ure will be at the end of each review.

enjoy, and the happiest of decembers to you all!

DECEMBER 11

Karitoki is no threat, he wishes no harm—but he has never been near enough to prove this and the Pania, oiling herself before him, is now so very close. His fingers itch to touch her. He wants to show that he is friendly, that he can be trusted.

an excellent story! it's a traditional premise - a human boy becomes infatuated with a sea-dwelling female creature and tries to adjust her behavior and attributes to better conform to his own preferences in a lover; to make her more suitable a partner on his land and his terms. but this story's more Wild Kingdom than Disney, and this pania is neither coy not submissive nor deferential. she's a creature of curiosity and appetite, but also of instinct and duty, which leads to some irreconcilable differences.

Erica This is in Beyond the Woods: Fairy Tales Retold - it's the one where he brings her orange oil, or somesuch, because she smells too fishy, yeah? And he gives her foods that will give her nice breath? And she's nice enough to try most of the things but then she just side-eyes him afterward and is all, "Hey, you wanna come play with my friends out in the surf?"

karen hahahah yeah, that's more or less it! i didn't know it was in that collection, which i am pretty sure i have around here somewhere, unless the bedbugs sent it to storage.

Erica Oh, I hope it didn't get bedbugged!
I thought of you a few times while reading it. I think it's a collection you'll mostly enjoy.

I was impressed with myself for following it up with A Feast of Sorrows because the two bookended so nicely.

karen ah, that one i KNOW i have around here somewhere...

Martyn Stanley I really enjoyed this one! If you ever want to do another thing where you review lots of short stories, please hit me up! You'd be very welcome to copy of my Lambton Worm and Return of the Worm Slayer stories! :)
