As much of the American Civil War was fought in Virginia and slavery did not become a major cause of the war until the Union victory at Gettysburg and the issue of the Emancipation Proclamation to keep the British from aiding the Confederacy, it is worth while to study the role of the Negro in the war and especially in Virginia. Brewer has done a good job of doing just that.
