The titular Ella is under a spell requiring her to always obey orders she is given. Her obedience was a “gift” from a thoughtless fairy, who refuses to remove her spell regardless of the pleas of Ella’s mother and fairy godmother. You can readily imagine the inconveniences caused by such a spell, and when Ella’s mother dies, leaving her to the tender mercies of her heartless father, her suffering begins in earnest. Naturally, she does manage to use her unique talents to eventually overcome her burden. I leave it to you to find out how for yourself.

This book is remarkably well-thought-out and quite entertaining. I liked the fairy-tale atmosphere and the characterization of the various races (giants, ogres, elves, etc.). I’d recommend it for anyone who likes fairy tales.
