The definitive book on the military history of the American Civil War. Well researched and authoritative, however Foote is 'soft' on the Confederacy and is even handed between the north and the south. He fails to adequately call to account the institution of slavery, a horror which is one of the few historical events which can be compared with the holocaust in terms of its horrors and numbers of causalities.

Jon I finally finished this three volume work. The Civil War A Narrative is well written. Foot has an engaging style and is very detailed. He has a good understanding of military matters however this book is deeply flawed. Foot try's to be even handed in his coverage however this even handedness shows Foots deep affinity for the South and the Confedracy. For instance categorises John Wilkes Booth and John Brown together as both mad men.
