really liked it

I'm always amazed at how writers can take a story that uses a lot of familiar themes and types of characters and make it come alive. That's what I found with this fantasy about three chilren whose parents are gone (but possibly not dead) and have been passed from orphanage to orphanage and then make a realization that there is something special about them. An evil woman, a friendly giant, a leader who has traded his ideals for greed, unlikely heroes--all of these are familiar elements and yet the author managed to make it different. An engaging, fast-paced, interesting book.
