The first hundred pages of The Marriage Plot were a slog, but things got much better when the focus broadened beyond Madeleine. I found the descriptions of Leonard's mental illness particularly affecting, although the DFW-ness of it all were a little hard to forget, sort of like watching a movie star play a fictional character when you can't really forget that it's a performance. Beautifully written and sometimes heartbreakingly well-observed, although nowhere near the tour de force that was Middlesex.
