this book, i think, is the difference between having a story to tell, and having a story but also actually being able to write. the mother-daughter story i could take or leave, but gormick does such an amazing job of capturing the nuances, claustrophobia and frustrating lack of control that are the markers of any dysfunctional family dynamic. so the story isn't necessarily a 'here's a really fucked up mother-daughter relationship' as it is gormick intricately, effectively and compellingly trying to make sense of her own life and mental state by seeing through the lense of her mother.
