really liked it

Tearlach has cared for Madeline since he was her father’s chief guardsman. Even though he soon learns that her father is a cruel, unworthy lord, he stays for Maddie’s sake, always keeping an eye out for her. But being the 4th son of a Scottish lord, Tearlach doesn’t think much of his prospects to win her hand.

When Maddie’s father is convicted for seditious plotting and imprisoned she becomes the ward of the King who puts her under the guardianship of the laird Henry de Moreville, who houses her in a small, tower near his castle with only an elderly couple to help her. Unscrupulously stealing from her monthly allowance from the king, Maddie has barely enough to live on, from what de Moreville allows her. But Maddie never complains. After her severe upbringing by a cruel and abusive father, she has learnt never to complain, never to be contentious but to at all times be quiet & accommodating.

I adored the relationship between Maddie and Tearlach. He is extremely protective of her. A strong, taciturn warrior, but I loved how Maddie brings out the tender and gentle side of him. Maddie too slowly emerges from her shell under Tearlach’s care. The bond that grows between them was beautiful to read.

A wonderful, sweet and tender story
