In this action-packed second book in the Allegiance series, Sarah Addison-Fox packs a wallop of heart-tugging characters and heart-pounding action. Both the characters and the author find their stride and footing in this book. If the worldbuilding was good in the first book, but perhaps lacked a tiny bit of clarity, it was crystal clear and stark in this book. If the plot took a bit to ramp up its tension in the first book, this book marched along with a tightly woven plot. In the last book, the line between good and evil, bad guy and good guy was drawn rather distinctly along the river boundary between one country and another. In this book, the boundary isn't as stark as characters learn that evil resides even within their own borders and their greatest enemy might be the one they had trusted.

This is a raw book. Celeste is pushed into doing and saying things against her conscience, and this book clearly shows the toll a life of spying and going undercover can take on a person. While the topics are dealt with very well and without unnecessary details, this isn't a book for young readers. It wasn't written to be. It was written for a mature readership. In some ways, this book is even cleaner than the first, with places Mick used "bloody" in the first book changed to "ruddy" for this one, a change that kept Mick's attitude and manner of speaking the same while making the language in the book less shocking for some.

The faith element was even more subtle in this one than the last one. It is still present, even in the places when it isn't explicitly stated. Celeste faces many people who seek to make her a slave once again, either literally or figuratively by objectifying her and using her. While she begins to find freedom in love instead of objectification, I can't wait to see where her journey will take her in the next two books of this series!
