This book follows four generations of black women who work as slaves in Cane River, Louisiana. Based on the author's own genealogy, she plots a story line that is enjoyable, intriguing, and enlightening. Each of the women are essentially, raped by their masters and wind up having lighter and lighter children. Aside from these well-handled scenes, the book is very high quality and definitely worth recommending and discussing.
