it was amazing

I absolutely loved this. The juxtaposition between the beautiful summer's day and the menacing black box, the mysterious lottery whose "prize" is only revealed in the last couple of sentences... Everything about this was utterly flawless.
This is the first piece of Shirley Jackson's writing that I've read, although I've been interested in picking up both 'We Have Always Lived in the Castle' and 'The Haunting of Hill House'. Now, knowing how much my heart was pounding after finishing this ridiculously short story, I'm going to prioritise reading one (or both) of those sooner rather than later. Genius.
