really liked it

A fictionalized biography of John Brown, the radical abolitionist, written by his guilt-ridden and emotionally confused son, Owen Brown. Traces the development and history of the man and his family and their lifelong commitment to the overthrow of slavery in America. Wonderful depiction of mid-nineteenth century America--social, political and religious. Extremely well-written and readable. Makes you want to put your children in the fields learning how to survive off the land and with their hands. (See also The Sweet Hereafter and Affliction)
