really liked it
bookshelves: thought-provoking-fiction

This book was an assigned reading for my senior English class, when I was in high school. I wasn't expecting to like it, but about ten pages in, I couldn't pull myself away.

What I like about this book can be divided into two categories. First, I like the story, the characters. I like that I hate them, that they irritate me and frustrate me. They're very realistic in their imperfections. Secondly, I like the symbolism. Usually, heavy symbolism in literature makes me want to gag, but in this book, it didn't bother me. I enjoyed the subtle play of real versus symbolic, and the ending that could be considered either happy or depressing.
