The peril of setting out to write The Great London Novel (cf Capital, A Week In December, etc.) is managing a diverse cast of characters while trying to pull together an interesting story. Shows promise, but falls short.

Some of the language is beautiful and the first third of the book is acutely observed. And then it all gets a bit muddy. Endless backstory, a plot that looks like it’s going somewhere before dissolving into a mash of coincidences, followed by a lacklustre ending.

I really wanted to like it, and had the quality of the first third held this would have been a four or five star review.
