Manhattan BeachIt's been a good reading year for me. Stayed up til all hours finishing this absorbing chunk of a novel about a young woman of Irish descent who longs to be a diver for the Navy during WWII when women had a chance at male jobs, and her interactions with her disabled sister, her coworkers on base and other New York denizens of the era. Beautiful writing and characters along with a suspenseful alternate wartime story of her missing father and the well-drawn criminal Dexter and his film noir cronies. I can envision a movie. Historical fiction with the satisfying drama of an earlier age.
