really liked it

reading this book was like popping popcorn. what it consists of is thousands of very short anecdotes/fun facts, almost entirely about artists (writers, painters, musicians, etc.) past and present. the conceit is that an old, failed, broke writer is assembling this as a way of dealing with his life and impending death. putting it in context. that idea didn't move me much--it's like one note played the whole book. but the information here is fascinating, and compulsively readable. if you can call something a good bathroom book and have it be a compliment, that's my compliment.
