decided to read this because of all the press, and the fact that i like mild fantasy plus the circus aspect sounded appealing. ended up getting it on CD, the reader is Jim Dale (he did Harry Potter), and while he is really good, he also makes all the characters sound 'old' which annoyed me. the other problem i had with the audio is that the story's timeline hops around, and at the start of each chapter it gives a date, but when you are listening it's hard to keep track and you can't really go back and check, so i repeatedly got confused about what was going on.

storyline-wise, i felt like this book was a little to abstract for my taste. that's probably not quite the right word, but the book sorta feels like someone is telling you the story from a dream they had, and this is not a good thing. i also hated the intermixed bits written in second person narration. and finally i didn't think there was enough 'action' relative to the length of the book, it just felt a little too drawn out.

anyway, it did have its redeeming features, mostly the magical creations and description, but i don't think i would recommend it to anyone i know
