I wanted to try Amanda Hocking because of her self-publishing success. I looked at her stuff, saw Hollowland, thought, "Zombies! Why not?" I expected it to be too teen-centric for me, but I actually loved it!

So, I thought, "Hey, maybe Amanda Hocking can make me like vampires."

But, no. Not even Hocking can make me like friendly vampires. Relationships/flirtations between girls in their mid-teens and men in their 20's to 40's are extremely tricky. It's difficult to overcome the creep-factor. For me, this book didn't do it. No magical explanation could override the unintended creepiness of grown man + half-grown girl.

However, if you like friendly-vampire-falls-for-young-girl stories, you'll like this. The writing is reasonably solid, although I think Hocking had gotten better by the time she wrote Hollowland. The human characters are interesting and definitely not stereotypes. The girl has a clear voice.
