This one has a very different feel than Levine's previous books. Lost Kingdom is a lot more violent and grim, whereas the danger in her other books is balanced by warmth and magic. I sometimes wanted to stop reading to avoid the grimness. Nonetheless, I enjoyed watching Perry change her view of the Bamarre and try to emulate their culture. I also deeply relate to her need to please those close to her, and I loved references to Two Princesses of Bamarre: Drault as a child, the seven league boots, and the magic tablecloth.

This book definitely won't be as beloved as Ella Enchanted, Two Princesses, or Fairest, but worth reading.
