Told in question and answer format this is a thirteenth century retelling in prose of the mythical stories of gods and heroes from Viking as recorded in the eddic and scaldic poetry of previous centuries. While a considerable amount of the poetry is included in the tales, the emphasis is on the prose retelling of the tales. In contemporary collection, the Elder, or Poetic Edda, which covers the same material, the verse tells the stories and short prose prologues tie the individual stories together.
