A sweet tween story about a Filipino boy reunited with his family in London. Left behind when his mother emigrated, Bernardo has been raised by relatives in a tiny village. He dreams of the day when he can see his mother again and meet his half-sister. Short Andi lives in London and eats, sleeps, breathes basketball. She also wants to meet her half brother--but when they see him in the airport, when he at last is granted permission to come to England, it's a shock: Bernardo is eight feet tall. Both Bernardo and Andi, speaking in alternating chapters, struggle with adjustments: Andi, fitting in at a new school and getting used to the changes in her family; Bernardo, in a foreign environment, feeling guilt at leaving his village, which is then devastated by an earthquake, and tormented by mysterious seizures. A book with a strong yet understated message about family and fitting in, and the deceptive nature of appearances. Junior high.
