I had to stop reading this because the hatred swelled so deep inside me, I felt I might harm an organ. The whole premise of this novel hinges on a) one giving a monkeys about Tarzan—a terrible piece of Hollywood drivel that spawned a monster, b) one finding the idea of a wisecracking ape writing his autobiography even remotely amusing, c) the reader’s demand for all manner of Hollywood trivia and associated retro kitsch. OK . . . I was perhaps a little harsh on this book. But the thing about comedic novels: they either amuse the reader, or they make him teary-eyed with frustration. I chose the latter. Ape grin.
