really liked it

Well, I just finished this. The descriptions of the Salinas Valley are, perhaps unsurprisingly, spot-on and lovely. It's a short book, and perhaps a bit (or a lot) predictable, plot-wise (foreshadow much?). The best word is probably overwrought. But while in general the longish short story/novella is not my favorite literary form, there is something to be said for a tightly written short novel, and this is an excellent one.

How much of my reading is essentially avoidance of other reading?

I skipped this in high school (likely, I avoided reading it by reading something else - probably Middlemarch), but, don't ask me how this happened, I'm suddenly a whole CD into an audio version of this. Even though, technically, I'm listening to A Tale of Two Cities right now.

Anne I read every Steinbeck I could get my hands on in high school.

Inder Whereas I avoided everything American - I was obsessed with 19th century Brits. Oh wait - I still am!

Anne Come on, let your native Californian shine through!

Inder I know, this is my home! I'm trying to remedy this hole in my education now ...
