really liked it
bookshelves: history

Tony Horwitz reminded me how little I know about American history before the Mayflower, and I consider myself pretty savvy on the subject of our nation's past. His journalistic storytelling style is always engaging, and as in "Confederates in the Attic," he skillfully exposes the absurd, inane and frightening ways in which contemporary Americans are living with and manipulating the dredges of our past. An enlightening, amusing and often brutally horrific account of European colonization and its aftermath.
