really liked it

Abbey's poetic writing about the desert landscape of Arches National Park and surrounding areas is breathtaking. Enjoy the journey; don't rush; stop occasionally and read a couple of paragraphs out loud and enjoy the brilliance of the images. Abbey spent many years working as a ranger, but Desert Solitaire deals with 2 summers in the late 1950s when he was a ranger at Arches (before any roads in the park were paved and I didn't even enjoy all the driving in it after they were paved!). He exhibits a great love of nature and particularly the desert environment and an equal distaste for the inevitable development that he sees coming. My only complaint is that Abbey was mostly scornful of the tourists who, in their own ways, were also trying to connect with that environment he loved. Enjoy the descriptions of his occasional off-off-road excursions into the wild, since few of us will ever get to experience nature quite like he did!
