I would normally rate this book three stars, but I knocked it down one star because of the ridiculous "don't tell anyone what this book is about" nonsense. You learn the basic plot very early in the story and there is nothing super shocking or surprising about it. I feel like the whole thing is just a cheesy marketing gimmick and I expect better from literary fiction. I found the whole thing insulting to me as a reader.

(climbing down from my soapbox)

That said, I generally liked this book (although like seems like a terrible word for such a sad story)--particularly the chapters told from Little Bee's perspective. Little Bee had a lot of keen observations on the world around her and she had such strength of character. I didn't really like Sarah--in spite of her selflessness toward Little Bee, I found her to be selfish and self-absorbed (even the help she gave Little Bee seemed as much about pursuing her own dreams as it was about helping someone else)--and I didn't enjoy the chapters told from her perspective nearly as much. Overall it was an interesting book and it raised important questions about the immigration system in first world countries. I would definitely recommend it to others who enjoy literary fiction--if they can stomach the trite marketing gimmick.
