Wasn't sure how to like this Linda Howard book, because some of hers are too supernatural-fantasy for me, and she seems to have trouble picking a genre.

This one was a better match for me than her Black Ops or CIA-killer series or her modern-day vampire series...I'm not even sure there's a difference in any of those aforementioned series.

This one stands alone, no series, and is pretty heavy in detail in terms of gore from black bear attacks, surviving in the mountains (in a rainstorm, with a killer bear/killer-person after you) and she spends a lot of detail and description getting the point across. That can get tedious.

The story itself is good, the idea is good, the killer bear is scary enough...a few parts are gory/gag-worthy. I'm not sure how to feel entirely about this book, except it's a good poolside read. It isn't anything to get excited about, but probably worth a shot if you find it on the library shelf. I wouldn't buy it.
