really liked it

This novel was great science fiction, with a focus on alien language and mental abstractions (a particularly preferred subgenre of mine). However, the setting and characters didn't really live up to Mievelle's previous offerings in terms of pure ingenuity. Perdido Street Station invented a new genre, and The City & The City was the best genre mashup I have ever read, so the competition is stiff. This book was still excellent food for thought and the best kind of intellectual scifi. I enjoyed that everything wasn't explained up front, but revealed in a way that drew me in the story.
