really liked it
bookshelves: childrens-and-ya, fantasy
Recommended for: Imaginative adults, middle-school outsiders

Not since the "Wizard of Oz" (and "Alice" before it) have I been so wholly transported into an alternate world, ably assisted by the author's unique and distinctive illustrations. Barker's absurdly named heroine is resourceful and clever, but also as human as they come. Abarat is a fantastical, dreamlike place, and one with its share of mortal dangers and terrifying characters.
