really liked it
bookshelves: nonfiction

This is a great book for well-read geeks like me who have a natural interest in finance but only a cursory understanding of it. I wouldn't have thought an explanation of mergers as marriages would make sense, nor that the proposal hedging central to Jane Austen novels could explain risk & return, or that risk pooling originated on merchant ships. No matter how educated you are, it remains a good idea to understand a field from a fifth-grader's perspective, just to check your underlying assumptions and intuitions. I may be able to follow the math, but I would rather understand finance from a historical perspective than learning by formulas.
