it was ok

A two- or three-star book for me. The narrator Helen's voice is fascinating but that's the only thing carrying the book -- the oddities of her voice, her self-absorption, her inability to conduct herself appropriately in any situation. She has a strained and bizarre relationship with her adoptive parents and doesn't seem to have had much of a relationship with her adoptive brother either, whose suicide is the reason for her return home. This is a narrator so astoundingly self-absorbed that she doesn't notice when her brother's friend is hit by a bus, and who reads what may be her brother's suicide note in search of her own name. Stylistically interesting, but I just don't think there's anything under the style.
