Nine-year-old Rettie takes care of her family on the Lower East Side of New York City during an influenza outbreak in 1918. With her father off fighting in the war in Europe and her mother ill with consumption, Rettie hunts for good bargains while shopping in the street and dreaming of all the pennies she might snatch during a local event. When her apartment building is quarantined, Rettie volunteers to keep the stairways clean, and the nurse who is visiting the area is impressed with how orderly she has managed to keep her family's apartment. I had never heard of this Ragamuffin Parade and its possible links to the well-known Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade so the story fascinated me. Back matter includes a photograph of one Thanksgiving scramble and some additional information. Clearly, Rettie takes on responsibilities far too large for her size, but she makes sure her family is healthy and has a wonderful Thanksgiving feast with her earnings. This slice of history should be shared with youngsters today so that they can be grateful for all that they have and realize just how challenging life is for some.
