2010: Interrupting Chicken by David Ezra Stein (Candlewick Press)
Caldecott Honor Book
Fiction/Early Childhood
I love this book! It's about a father chicken reading a bedtime story to his little chicken. He reads several stories, but never gets to finish one because the Little Chicken interrupts every story to save the characters. For example, Little Chicken rushes into the story to save Little Red Riding Hood from the wolf by admonishing her not to talk to strangers; she doesn't, and she walks safely through the woods. Finally, Little Chicken reads a story of her own to her papa and he promptly goes to sleep with Little Chicken curled up beside him. This is a funny story that I think both parents and children would like.
