2.5 stars.
I think I might've given this a better rating if I hadn't already read *The Innocents Abroad*, or at least not read the two books in succession. Where TIA has a freshness to it, a definite narrative structure, and pointed humour, *Roughing It* is a series of somewhat related incidents, confused by their arbitrary (though intense) humour, and tied together via the form of (yet another) travel-log. Though the book is quite funny (sometimes funnier than TIA), and in some cases is quite intellectually beautiful... I just don't see the point.
