this dude is wonderfully adept with english. his sentences are laser-precise and wonderfully evocative. and that he writes about a noir-ish hero who is in the thrall of intoxicants and vice makes his descriptive exactitude even more expressive. that said, i heard the author on an npr interview and he admitted that he is not a writer who plans ahead that path of his story. for most tales, i don't think i would mind. but i found that nugget of knowledge to be a little annoying while reading a mystery novel. in the midst of a murder intrigue, it kind of sucks for a reader to know that the author is equally clueless as to the identity of the culprit. still, i'll be back. this guy can write.
