A huge history of a huge city through smart intertwining of the achievements of several families. That includes both forward and backward references, making it easier to follow and grasp, and providing some sort of closure around it. Maybe it's a little pretentious, trying to cover too much of the history of the city, becoming a >800 pages book. I would've prefer devoting a little more time/pages to the most recent century, but that's a matter of taste.
