I'm not sure what to think of this one. I liked the chemistry between the MCs but that's about it.

Gemma has been shunned by the ton because her father is a scumbag.
Towards the end of the story you get glimpses of what it was like being raised by him... not good. Yet at the same time, it made her character suddenly flat. If she had such an interesting upbringing, why does she come across as any other simpering mary-sue miss??

She meets Sam by chance while picnicking with her aunt and they are both instantly smitten. But she is so used to being treated like crap because of her last name, that she is hesitant to let Sam know it. He has been hurt by previous love interests turning him over in favour of other men. So they are a couple of doubters but Sam keeps finding the courage to seek out her company. He even invites her to a house party he is giving.
The other women in the party are mostly glossed over filler. Four of them are conniving to keep her and Sam apart but it's all told to the reader and not much shown. They go from nice young women to horrible back stabbing villains in a comical way. The way Sam decides to give them their comeuppance wasn't clever in the least even though the author suggested it would be. It was about as straight forward as it gets. The way he helps Gemma regain her dignity with the Ton also wasn't clever and wasn't particularly believable either.

So by the end I felt kinda let down. I did skim a fair bit for the last 2/3 of the book.

Then in the ending it went from a pretty much PG story to full blown erotic in the turn of a page.

So the whole thing felt like a tacked together hodge podge with no depth or anything interesting to keep my attention.
