I've never read Ann Tyler before, and found the story rather slow and the plot lacked a specific story arc. The writing was great, and I loved the depth of the characters as well as the information on middle eastern culture in the US. I will likely read her books again for the wonderful characterization--they truly leap off the page--but I will look for a story with a bit more plot to it.

Carole I'm a huge fan of Anne Tyler's, but this probably wasn't the best one for a new reader to read. Read "The Accidental Tourist" and "The Homesick Restaurant." However she doesn't have a huge story arc usually. Her brilliance is in her characters.
