well, i have to admit i work in the industry, so i'm not unbiased, but yes - audiobooks are rad! and i've been listening at work when i just can't take anymore "election" coverage or disturbing news about iraq, tanzania, lumber poaching, the weather, etc. this one went down easy, tho it's not uplifting in any way. i'm not a huge fan of the way it's read, tho Lily's voice is beautiful and matches the lyric prose well. but the story is damn sad. sad in the desert. sad with horses. sad with pre-puberty. sad, sad, and more sad. and more sad with horses. and tho Lily (as Alice) gets snarky at times and snaps into focus as the 13-year-old self-absorbed narrator she truly is, most of the time the tone is hushed and tragic. if you feel like emersing yourself in (or simply nourishing your current) malaise this is a good rainy-week listen.
