Gardiner keeps the story’s focus on little Willy and his dog, Searchlight, without skidding off the track too far with explanations for the grandfather’s “illness” or descriptions of the tax collector or the Indian Stone Fox. The book offers a sound example of the main character overcoming an obstacle (with only the slightest bit of help from an adult). There’s a feeling of historical setting; this could have been more clearly established. Some elements are a bit unbelievable, however, such as the dog’s intelligence and the willingness of the town to allow little Willy to race. (Question: was this the book that the movie “Iron Will” was based upon?) Overall, exciting pacing and a quick read.
