This is the third book I've read by Paul Theroux. While I wasn't much impressed by the first one (The Great Railway Bazaar) I very much enjoyed Ghost Train to the Eastern Star, and I enjoyed this one as well. Theroux travels slowly through Africa, from Cairo in the north all the way to Cape Town in the south, stopping in the Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Zimbabwe, and other countries. He lingers, he talks to people, and he shares their stories with us, and he also shares the opinions he forms along the way. Reading Theroux is a great way to travel vicariously, and I'll certainly read him again at some point in the future.

This was the first of what is projected to be 18 consecutive Africa-related books that I'll be reading this year.
