** spoiler alert ** I liked this quote, which pretty much summed up the book for me as well: "Everyone expects to be at the end of something. What no one expects is to be at the end of everything ." [p.242]... Yeah. The book started out very promising. I was hooked! But then, the middle sprang up and the ending was just a "WTF, mate?" I didn't understand how there was nothing regarding Ping and her child's death. Really? She what, just died in childbirth? It's like sorta mentioned in passing, which I thought if Makepeace had such a strong attachment to Ping, then she would have recalled every detail of her friend's death. She would have written it down. You know, healing process with her grief. Oh well. Then, I was expecting more of a gun-fight/shit hits the fan type of ending between her and Eben. I mean, GAH! He put lye on her face disfiguring her forever and the ending was "she puts two bullets in him and the rest of the group is so stunned that she somehow escapes..." Uh, Ok... jeez, thanks for the vindication. Finally, when the hell did she have sex with Shamsudin so that she has a baby at the end of the book?? I feel like this was another subtle one liner that I just missed somehow. So, it had promise but the ending just fell apart on me. :(
