This book really impressed me. I enjoyed the writing and the story and was quite connected with Precious by the end of the book, though I can't say that I'd grown much of a fondness to her. She is definitely quite brutal but she is very raw and real. I couldn't particularly connect with any of the characters as I haven't been through anything they have, but it didn't stop me from feeling for them and sometimes feeling a sense of admiration. This isn't a book for those who are adverse to or offended by graphic language, swearing and reading about abuse. The language is strong, different and effective. The book had such a fantastic sense of realism thanks to both the slang writing and the story. Precious/Push gives a really deep insight into the life of an abused, deprived girl and her new-found friends who really are treated as though they're at the very bottom of American society. This is a very powerful book that I'm glad that I read and which gave me an interesting view into life in Harlem.
