You want bleak Nordic angst? Read Indriðason .

I loved it. Best of the Icelandic crime fiction I've read. Very thoughtful plot, not over run or gone gory or gothic.

Some very interesting ideas very sparsely put together. Despite what I thought it would be, it wasn't bleak . As a police procedural it is keenly put together with an attention to detail and Detective Erlendur's outlook and methods remind me more so in this first outing of Martin Beck -- -- Maj Sjöwall, Per Wahlöö Swedish creation.

I can offer no greater comparison.

Icelandic fiction offers a wonderful -- and essential -- sense of location which is both geographic and demographic as though the Norse sagas are being continued as appendices. I can't offer themic detail without giving the plot away but I can add that "Jar City" is more a political statement than a sentence to a perverse milieu.
